OFFSET (Offshore Floating Storage of Energy and Transfer) is an innovative offshore energy system that converts renewable electricity from offshore wind farms directly into green hydrogen and ammonia on a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO).

The facility is connected to offshore wind generation and uses abundant sea water to produce green hydrogen. Hydrogen can be exported as such to the shore by newly developed subsea thermoplastic piping and /or by repurposed gas pipelines. Part of the hydrogen could also be converted to ammonia that can then be stored onboard and transferred to shuttle vessels for delivery to industrial users. The concept also investigates direct seawater electrolysis, eliminating the need for desalination thus reducing both costs and environmental impact.

By producing energy carriers close to the source of renewable electricity, OFFSET reduces grid congestion, avoids curtailment of offshore wind power, minimizes the need for new infrastructure, and enables large-scale storage of renewable energy in the form of molecules.

The modular and scalable design allows deployment alongside future offshore wind farms and supports the transition to a flexible, low-carbon energy economy.
